러시아 귀족 출신의 아버지와 프랑스계 발레댄서인 어머니 사이에서 자라났다.
아역 스타로 출발해서 10-20대를 거쳐 스타로 자리잡은 헐리우드의 예외적인 여배우로 평가받는다. 다섯 살 때인 1943년 영화 <Happy Land>로 데뷔하였다. 17살 때 제임스 딘과 함께 출연했던 <Rebel Without a Cause, 1955>으로 헐리우드의 대표적인 스타가 되었고, <Splendor in Grass, 1961> 등으로 아카데미 여우주연상에 노미네이트 되었다. <West Side Story, 1961>에서는 성숙한 여인의 모습을 보여주었고, <Gypsy, 1962>, <Love With the Proper Stranger, 1963> 에도 출연하였다.
1969넨에는 <Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice>에 출연하였고, 1979년 <From Here to Eternity>에 출연하여 골든 글로브 어워드 TV 드라마부문 최우수여자 연기상을 수상하였다.
우드는 43세 때인 1981년 마지막 영화인 <Brainstorm, 1983>을 찍다가 익사로 세상을 떠났다.
