젤웨거는 1996년 영화 <Jerry Maguire>에 출연하였다. 2001년 <Bridget Jones’s Diary>와 뮤지컬 <Chicago, 2002>에서 록시 하트로 아카데미어워즈에 두 번 노미네이트 되었다. 드라마 <Cold Montain>에 출연하여 아카데미어워즈에서 여우조연상을 수상하였다.
그녀는 골든 글로브 어워즈와 미국 배우 조합상에서 각각 세 번 수상하였고, 2009년 헤이스티 푸딩 여자 연극인상을 수상하였다. 또한, 헐리우드 명예의 전당에 올랐다.
텍사스 캐티 출생. 캐티 고등학교 때 스포츠를 즐겼으며, 치어리더, 드라마 클럽 회원이기도 하였다. 1987년 고등학교를 졸업하고 텍사스 대학에 진학하였고, 연기를 평생 직업으로 삼기로 결심하고 매진하기 시작하였고, 1991년 졸업하였다.
